Stepping into a room that’s sustained at 105 degrees with 40% humidity to exercise can sound rather intimidating, but that’s what Bikram Yoga is all about!
Here are just a few benefits to practicing Bikram Yoga:
Flexibility: The heat will allow you to safely reach new levels of personal flexibility and by practicing these poses in the heat you will be able to push yourself to go a little deeper in a stretch.
Breath: Yoga is all about breathing in a deep and controlled manner and when you add the element of heat, you need to breath deeply or you won’t make it too far!
Strength: Bikram Yoga is low impact and uses muscles you didn’t know you had; you use your body instead of weights and the primary focus is on spinal strength, which is key to a healthy life!
Detox: When you practice hot yoga, you will sweat and sweat a lot! The postures themselves are detoxifying for your muscles, organs, and glands. Just remember to make sure you drink lots of water!
Cardio: Your heart works the same way doing yoga postures in a heated room as it does when running a mile, and you never even leave your mat! When you balance, you have to contract your muscles and that takes some work. Those types of positions will get your heart working harder. A 90-minute class can burn up to 1,000 calories. When you stretch and compress your internal organs and glands, you also stimulate your metabolism so you can continue burning calories after your class is over!
Healing: Practicing yoga, especially hot yoga, can help heal old injuries and offer pain management - especially if you suffer from back pain.
